3. Is this an intrauterine pregnancy? An ultrasound is important to confirm that the pregnancy is located inside the uterus. A pregnancy outside the uterus is called an ectopic pregnancy and it is life threatening. This would require immediate medical attention. Ultrasounds are not a requirement in Illinois prior to obtaining an abortion, and standard abortion procedures are not used to treat ectopic pregnancies.
