You might have heard recent news headlines or social media posts regarding “fake clinics.” Many of the claims say these clinics or centers do not employ actual medical professionals. They accuse “fake clinics” of providing misleading information and lying to get women to come to them by saying they provide abortions. Once a woman comes to the center, they claim the “fake clinic” uses scare tactics to try and shame women into not having an abortion.
While Focus Women’s Center can’t speak to the practices at other clinics or centers, we can assure our patients, potential patients, and community members that we are a legitimate medical clinic comprised of highly skilled licensed medical professionals. Our Medical Director, a board-certified OB/GYN, oversees all our medical services. Patients meet with a staff made up of licensed registered nurses, and our ultrasounds are performed by registered diagnostic medical sonographers. In fact, we openly display our licenses and certifications inside our clinic where all our patients can easily view. We stay up to date on all our continuing education and other obligations that are required to keep our licenses untarnished and valid with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
All information that we provide to our patients during the appointment is evidence-based and valid. We make sure to thoroughly source any information we give on handouts and our website, and we use legitimate, medical resources when creating these. Some of our sources include the US National Library of Medicine, ACOG, the Mayo Clinic, the CDC, the American Pregnancy Association, and the FDA – just to name a few.
We firmly believe that knowledge is power and that all patients should be fully informed on ALL their options when making their own healthcare decisions. That is why every patient of ours, regardless of their intention, learns about their options of abortion, parenting, and adoption at their first appointment. We want to make sure our patients are fully educated on their choices so that they can make an informed decision. Our staff presents these options unbiasedly and with no judgment. We are here to simply provide the information because we believe education is empowerment.
If you call/text our clinic or visit our website, you will see that we are upfront about the services that we offer. Although we don’t perform or refer for abortions at our clinic, we do acknowledge that it is a medical procedure and one of the three options a woman may consider during her pregnancy. As with any medical procedure, it is important to know what to expect, its potential risks and side effects, as well as what to look for in an abortion provider. We also do not provide continuing prenatal care, nor do we get involved in the adoption process. We are here to be a first step in an unplanned pregnancy by offering education and support so that our patients can figure out their next move.
Ultimately, this is a big decision for them. We want our patients to be confident in the choices they make, and we want them to be safe! We never profit from their decision.
